Biography

Depeche Mode are an English electronic band formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex.

Depeche Mode released their debut record in 1981, Speak & Spell, bringing the band onto the British new wave scene. Clarke left the band after the release of the album, leaving the band as a trio to record A Broken Frame, released the following year. Alan Wilder (keyboards, drums, occasional songwriter) officially joined the band in late-1982, replacing Clarke, while Gore took over lead songwriting duties, establishing a line up that would continue for the next thirteen years.

The band’s last albums of the 1980s, Black Celebration and Music for the Masses, established them as a dominant force on the mainstream electronic music scene.

101 is a live concert and documentary released in 1989 chronicling the final leg of the band’s 1987/1988 Music for the Masses Tour and the final show at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena which was held on 18 June, 1988. The performance was the 101st and final performance of the tour (and coincidentally also the number of a famous highway in the area).

The documentary shows Depeche Mode preparing for the 101st and final concert of its massive world tour at the Rose Bowl Stadium, Pasadena, California, while a group of fans who won a contest travel to the concert through the United States on a bus.

The film and the documentary were directed by David Dawkins, Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker and produced by the latter.
