[2005-…], Perth, WA, Australia |
Tame Impala is an Australian psychedelic rock band founded in 2007.
Tame Impala began as a home recording project for Kevin Parker, who writes, records, performs, and produces the music. As a touring act, the project consists of Parker (guitar, vocals), Jay Watson (synthesiser, vocals, guitar), Dominic Simper (guitar, synthesiser), Cam Avery (bass guitar, vocals), and Julien Barbagallo (drums, vocals).
Tame Impala debuted in 2010 with the release of Innerspeaker, which was certified gold in Australia and well received by critics. The group’s 2012 follow-up, Lonerism, was also acclaimed, reaching platinum status in Australia and receiving a Grammy Award nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. The band’s third album, Currents, will be released on 17 July 2015.
The band name “Tame Impala” is a reference to the impala, a medium-sized antelope.
An obedient, multi-coloured gazelle roaming the street of Perth, Australia. That’s how a listener of Tame Impala would describe the band if they were English-speaking and their imagination was led by some psychotropic substance. Yet, Kevin Parker’s band is a poor excuse to open the doors of perception: their music itself is enough to disrupt the listener’s conscience and to rekindle, even in minds that have never known the World Trade Center, the memory of psychedelic years. The Beatles have settled in his superego, and electronic music in his headphones: demiurge Parker endows Tame Impala with a timeless power. The Australians love Paris, that’s where they recorded their second album. Bet they’ll love it even more at the end of August.
