Ibeyi | #ibeyi
(Lisa-Kaïndé Diaz, Naomi Diaz)
[2013-…], Paris, Île-de-France, France

Ibeyi is a French-Cuban musical duo founded in 2013 and based in Paris.

Ibeyi consists of twin sisters, Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz.

The duo sings in English and Yoruba, — a Nigerian language their ancestors spoke before being brought to Cuba by the Spanish to be made slaves in the 1700s — though Lisa’s is the lead voice. Naomi plays traditional Cuban percussion instruments cajón and Batá drum, while Lisa also plays piano.

Ibeyi is pronounced ee-bey-ee. In the Yoruba language this translates as “twins”.

Ibeyi’s music has elements of Yoruba, French, and Afro-Cuban and fuses jazz with beats, samples with traditional instruments.

From Paris to Montreal. From Tokyo to Havana. One name is on everybody’s lips. With Ash, the Franco-Cubans of Ibeyi have succeeded in establishing themselves as the irreplaceable queens of a style they have made their very own. Daughters of the percussionist Miguel Anga Díaz of Buena Vista Social Club, the two twin sisters marry their warm voices with great subtlety to a minimalist sound tinged with soul, electro and hip-hop. While one gets her piano to sing, the other hammers out a throbbing rhythm on her cajón, accompanied by Yoruba incantations. An ever more pressing invitation to dance with the spirits of the dead, but above all with those of the living.
