Biography

Blur are an English rock band, formed in London in 1988.

Blur’s debut album Leisure (1991) incorporated the sounds of Madchester and shoegazing.

Following a stylistic change influenced by English guitar pop groups such as The Kinks, The Beatles and XTC, Blur released Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993), Parklife (1994) and The Great Escape (1995). As a result, the band helped to popularise the Britpop genre and achieved mass popularity in the UK, aided by a chart battle with rivals Oasis in 1995 dubbed the “Battle of Britpop”.

Starshaped is a 1993 documentary film on the British band Blur. Conceived as a fly on the wall documentary, it became a collection of live performances, videos and festival footage, and band interviews.

Highlights include the band’s performance at the 1991 Reading Festival and a brief interview with the late John Peel, and the band’s 1992 appearance at the Glastonbury Festival when singer Damon Albarn lunges into a PA speaker which falls, injuring his foot. The band are regularly captured in drunken states through the film, sometimes arguing and even (in Albarn‘s case) vomiting. The majority of the music in the film comes from the band’s first two albums, Leisure and Modern Life Is Rubbish, although the non-album tracks “Popscene” and “Day Upon Day” are also included.

Three years of candid camera on the road with blur, from Reading 1991 through the dark ages of the EEC in 1992 and then on to “Modern Life”. This 63 minute tour film features live footage including scenes from Glastonbury ’92, the Heineken Music Festival ’94 in Nottingham, and festivals in Germany, Denmark and Sweden.

This original version of “Starshaped” contains the original promo video clips for the first seven Blur singles.

Starshaped also includes footage from two live shows: The Princess Charlotte pub in Leicester, just after they were signed; and a 1991 show at the Kilburn National in London.
